What’s Baking, mid-late March, 2014

Spring is almost here! (Though the cold weather persists.) I woke up a chilly 15 degrees, and felt an odd sense of reality all day with the bright sun, but the cold weather.  Nonetheless, to welcome Spring we have spring flowers on the tables at the shop and Spring-like flavors this week too.

With Zen Cookery leaving us for Slone Business School, we are working on more of our own vegan options. Come on in and see what’s cooking vegan-wise. We’ve developed a bundt, a cupcake, an empanada and are working on a cookie or two.  Of course, there is always our english muffins, and this week we are working on our sour dough starter–our sour dough bread is vegan.

Oh, and on the cookie topic, we are now selling our chocolate chip cookie dough by the pint! Makes 12 40g cookies. Comes frozen. Bake all at once, or cut off chunks for smaller batches.

Cookies: (Some may only be available at the store)

  • Chocolate chip with walnuts (DF)
  • Dried fruit and nut biscotti (DF)
  • Peanut butter and peanut butter with chocolate chips (DF)

  • Vanilla-Lemon with salted ginger Italian buttercream
  • Lemon with lemon curd and a lightly flavored fresh lemon-rose buttercream
  •  Cakerons! chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, soft macaron shell, chocolate glaze. (DF)
  • Flourless chocolate with mocha glaze (we are working on a DF version this week!)

Cakes and pies:

  • assorted frosted cakes
  • Orange almond cake (DF)
  • Orange almond cake with dark chocolate glaze (DF)
  • Lemon-ginger almond cake (DF)
  • Swedish Almond Tort with currants or mixed berries

  • Empanadas: 1) Black bean (beans, sun dried tomatoes, scallions, spices and cheese); 2) Spinach and cheese (spinach, mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, garlic, chili powder); 3) Roasted peppers, sundried tomatoes and cheese, 4) vegan variety with potato, spinach and spices)
  • broccoli, onion, tomato quiche
  • Peanut noodles! (vegan–made with black rice noodles)
  • Sandwiches: homemade nutella w/ almond butter (Vegan) or sliced egg and avocado on brioche
  • Butternut squash-ginger soup and Roasted  veggie soup.
