What’s Baking, Week of July17th

Order here.

We have been back for a week from our summer holiday and churning out new things. The heat is supposed to break tomorrow night, so quit huddling in your air-conditioned home/office, and come on in to our pleasantly air-conditioned store. Great place to meet family or friends, or read a book.

What’s New this Week!

Ice Cream Sandwiches. We converted a recipe i found online for traditional cookie/cake style ice cream sandwiches, and after a couple tries we found an iteration we love. So we have Dairy with Vanilla ice cream and Dairy Free with Mint Chip ice cream in stock now. We did make a very small vegan batch, that you can’t really tell any difference from (maybe a tiny bit more fluffy), so as soon as we are low on our vegan ice cream cookie sandwiches, we will make some in vegan as well. Come try it! You’ll like it!

Strawberry Shortcake is back on the menu for the summer!

Have a Slice of Cake. When i started Violette’s i thought for sure the cupcake craze would be like a ship passing in the night. (Nope, Lol) For 12 years we’ve been waiting for craze to die out so we can offer slices of cake. Well, since love of cupcakes is not going away anytime soon, we decided to start offering cake by the slice. Last week we rolled out our first one. What i love about a slice of cake is the ration of frosting to cake is just perfect. And there is something satisfying about eating it with a fork. Somehow, in my opinion, you can savor it more, and it seems like more of an opulent treat. If you are a cake lover, come on in and have a slice. Baker’s choice of what kinds we will offer each week, but they are different from our cupcakes. Last weeks, was dark chocolate cake, dark chocolate ganache, vanilla Italian buttercream, and dark chocolate drizzle with white chocolate curly cues on top.

Saturday Special

The special this sat is FRITTERS! Apple and Blueberry (2 kinds). We don’t make these that often because they are time consuming to make. So don’t miss out! They Freeze well.

Weekly Bread

BAGELS! and Challah. Yes, i know i said Bagels wouldn’t be until the end of the month, but putting together our menu is like a puzzle. Bagels are very labor intensive and so are donuts, so we can’t have them the same week. And we have to factor in staff vacations and our new kitchen hire and come up with a menu that is do-able. Plus i’m teaching the Convert your Fav recipe class this Sat, and no way i’d be standing by 4-5pm, if i start at 2 am on Donuts. SOOOO, we are having bagels this week.

The Breakfast Special  for Sat is Bagel Sandwiches.  We have a delicious roster of new sandwiches, which we think you will love!

Mail Ordering is almost Live!

We have a few more details to work out. Believe it or not, someone is making an app to help make Shopify work for us. We’ve found that all the POS/apps, Shopify, Squareup, Toast etc, are very cookie cutter and don’t work well for a bakery (even though Toast is all about food businesses.) So we were disappointed to find out that Shopify for instance, couldn’t quote our actual shipping cost or print mail orders! (Yes, it’s like building a house without a bathroom or kitchen!) We did several tests and for instance, if we mailed 2000 cupcakes, they calculated one box and $20 for shipping to CA. Shopify’s suggested solution was to calculate the highest cost you’d ever  incur for all orders and charge that amount for all orders! 🤦‍♀️  😳 So I found a Shopify compatible app to deal with the mail pricing. And the developer of that App, sent me someone who is interested in developing a Shopify app so we can print your order when mail orders come in. (Shopify solution was to assign someone to sign in online every hour or so to look to see if we have any mail orders — i kid you not.)  So basic. And yes, so stupid these aren’t already features. But the upshot is it will take us another week or two to get the mail order up and running. Just giving you all the details so you know, it’s complicated!
