What’s Baking, Week of June 9th

Smart Choices, Good Results

I’m old enough to remember both 1988 and 2008 as extinction years for businesses, particularly small businesses. Both times I watched businesses shrink and disappear.

Like everyone, I’ve cut back on discretionary spending because my budget is being pinched too. Recently a friend asked if we could meet for dinner and which of our two favorite places I wanted to go. I’ve cut back dramatically on going to both. I chose not based on which was my favorite, but on which one needed my support more.

That tends to be how I make purchasing decisions at the moment. Who do I want to see standing when this financial mess is over?

The Clover effect is real. It was loyal customers turned investors who saved Clover from losing all of its stores and allowed two locations to survive.

Loyal customers matter. They are the key ingredient to business survival right now.

We’re doing two farmers markets this year not because we thought, gee, that 13-hour shift—from bakery packing to market, back to the bakery, and then cleanup—would be fun. We’re doing them because, for us, it’s a matter of survival.

Without those farmers market revenues, we can’t pay our rent. It’s that basic.

So even though we recently made The Boston Globe’s Best of the Best and may appear to be confidently surviving, remember that it’s a thread that keeps us afloat—and you are part of that thread.

I hope you’ll keep us in mind when you make your purchasing choices.

Thank you for supporting us over the last 15 years. We couldn’t have done it without you. And we can’t continue to survive without your support. 💛

Copley Friday

We had another hot, sunny, beautiful day at Copley.

We determined that we need a refrigerated display case and have ordered one. We won’t have it this week (so no store cakes and a more limited cupcake selection), but we should have it the following week—along with our own battery generator, since there are no electrical outlets available.

Stop by and see us. Pick up a sandwich! Your visit makes investments like these worthwhile and helps us bring more of our products to the market.

Don’t forget that you can preorder through our regular ordering platform and pick up directly at the market. Simply choose “Delivery” ($0 delivery fee) and write “Copley” in the Special Instructions box.

French Honey

People are loving it!

We can’t sell honey directly at the market because there is a local honey producer there, but we can bring it as a special preorder.

Available now:

• Lavender
• Acacia
• Mediterranean
• Chestnut
• Forest
• Thyme
• White Heather
• Gingerbread Honey Spread
• Hazelnut Honey

Ask us for recommendations—we love helping customers find a favorite.

Flowers in Time for Father’s Day

Last Sunday was the Secret Gardens tour in Cambridge. While I never sign up (our gardens are a jungle and the paths are too narrow for the hordes of visitors), people can easily experience our garden from our neighbor’s yard.

I was inside working but could hear the astonishment at the garden in general—”it’s practically a nursery, with so much variety”—and especially the exclamations over the roses.

We are in full rose season at the moment.

Give Dad cake and flowers at the same time. Order flowers for your cake!

Now Available!

Fruit Tarts

Shortbread crust, house-made dairy-free lemon curd, and fresh organic fruit.

Refreshing. Delicious. Staff favorite.

Angel Food Cupcakes

Filled with lemon curd and topped with rose cream.

June Motto

Stay calm, smell a rose.

Pie Season / July 4th

Peach pie with crust will be returning in the coming weeks, just in time for July 4th.

What other pie flavors would you like for your celebration?

July 4th is right around the corner, which means pie season. We will also have oversized challah rolls (like they use at Black Ruby) for your hamburger grilling delight.

Saturday — Soft Pretzels

These are sourdough pretzels. If you love our sourdough bread and bagels, you’ll love these.

Available in salted and cheddar, with two dipping sauces.

As usual, preordering is always best.

Bread

Challah — rolls and loaves (dairy-free)

Bagels (vegan) — 5 varieties. Order all one flavor or mix and match. The Rosemary Sea Salt and Black Olive bagels are my personal favorites.

Made with our 17-year starter • vegan

Load up—everything freezes beautifully.

Bagels

Now available every Friday by preorder, with a limited quantity available in the shop.
