What’s Baking, Week of March 17th

See This Week’s Menu Here

Here is what we are doing to keep you and our staff safe from Covid-19. Staff with even a hint of any sickness are staying home. Staff are washing hands even more than normal. We sanitize our surfaces regularly with a solution recommended by the WHO, and sanitize our POS after each customer. We have wet wipes for customer use when they walk in the store. We have a sign on our door that asks customers with any hint of sickness to refrain from coming in and to instead call us from outside (number posted) and we will bring their order out to them.

We are working on a plan which we will roll out once we get a better sense of the number of quarantined households in the Boston region. If there are significant numbers of people quarantined  we will do delivery to Quarantined households ONLY.  This will Not be On Demand delivery. Rather we will have certain days when we go to specific areas to do delivery, depending on demand and need. There will be a minimum order and a delivery fee depending on how many people in that area need deliveries. Delivery is a loss for most small businesses, and is partially why several Gluten Free bakeries went out of business. So this is our short term solution to help those quarantined at home, not a change in our business model. The delivery services like Door Dash etc charge us 35-50% of the sales price. We don’t have those kinds of margins to use these services.

If the virus progresses significantly, we will also facilitate those who have zero tolerance of social interaction. We will do this by online order and payment (via an online invoice) with notification by customer of day and approx time of pick up. Those people will be able to text us when they pull up and we will bring their order to the car. This service will require at least 24 hour notice so that we can get orders packed each morning and are not attempting to do it on the fly. We were already understaffed, and then one of our counter people was sent home by her university, and with our “no sniffles” policy, staff are out more frequently. So we ask for your patience, please.

Also, one request. Please consider not hoarding at the grocery store, or supplies like rubbing alcohol . You don’t need rubbing alcohol if you are staying at home, but the way that stores like ours keep people safe is by using WHO recommended formulas that require alcohol. I literally have gone out 4 mornings searching for more, only to be told that a store sold out within 15 minutes, even in the middle of the night. Stores are restocking daily and people are hoarding. Ditto at the grocery store. We can’t buy all our product from our commercial suppliers because we use mostly organic ingredients and commercial suppliers don’t offer many things organic. So we get peanut butter, and vegetables, etc from WholeFoods, Trader Joes and Market Basket. I’ve asked all these stores if they are having a supply problem and they all say NO. That they are stocking FOUR TIMES THE NORMAL AMOUNT EVERY DAY and by 1 or 2 in the afternoon they are sold out. This is pure craziness. There is not a food shortage anywhere in the world where there is a significant outbreak of Covid-19. Nor is it a virus that requires the use of excessive toilet paper! So please stop and think before you put those extra packages of something in your cart as i witnessed today from the person in front of me in line at Trader Joes (18 packs of pasta!)
