What’s Baking, Week of May 18th (reminder we are closed on Tuesdays for May)

Preorder from our Menu

Hope you all are enjoying the heat. I am very glad it ended up in the 70s, instead of high 80s as predicted. This area has largely not suffered anything dramatic from global warming (yet) but 90 degree weather in May, following days that dip into the 30s, should cause us all to pause and ask ourselves: What am I doing to help combat global warming? An article in today’s New York Times discusses how Scotland’s peatlands are being restored because “the world [has] grasped that nothing on earth is more efficient at locking up carbon, potentially for thousands of years if properly maintained.”  In this article the issue of clothing production came up because one of the billionaires investing in peat restoration has one of the largest clothing production empires in the world. Apparently his vast restoration efforts do not offset global warming caused by production of his clothing brands. “Fashion is responsible for more annual global carbon emissions than maritime shipping and air travel combined, according to a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.” So clothing is one way you can take baby steps toward helping the environment. Everyone likes new clothes, but new clothes come at a high price for the environment, no matter if they are cheap for consumers. I like new clothes as well as anyone else, but before i purchase clothes or other consumer goods, i’ve been asking myself, do I really need new clothes (other items)? Most of the time, the answer is no. The same goes for our cell phones. Mobile phones are projected to account for almost 25% of global warming and pollution in the next 15-20 years. So hanging on to your old cell phone (we use my old 6+ year old cell phone, as our phone at the bakery) and buying only when absolutely necessary is another small way to help. It comes down to being aware of our choices, and that everything comes with a hidden cost.

We have rolled out our summer pastries –Cream Puffs, Boston Cream Fuffs, Strawberry Short Cake and Fresh Fruit lemon Curd Tarts (my personal favorite!), and once we get better staffed we will bring out our Angel Food Cupcakes with lemon curd center and a dollop of rose cream, Lemon Poppy Seed bundtlettes, and Lemon Ricotta Savory Tarts. At the moment, we are producing all we can with the staffing we have. PLEASE do not request us to make something special for you not on our menu.We simply don’t have the staffing to accommodate any special requests.

Deliveries are Thursday and Friday late afternoon only and Sat. We’ve opened the app for those three days, but please do not request an early delivery on Thursday or Friday. The delivery people can not accommodate. Like everyone, they are short staffed.

Saturday Special is Sweet and Savory Brioche! See our menu for more information about flavors!  Donut Day is coming up on May 28th. We will be closing at 3pm on that day, due to anticipated staffing shortages (gaps between when people leave and new people start). So plan to pick up your orders that day by 3pm.
