Fall is Upon Us!

I know all you cold weather fiends love the Fall, but it is not my favorite time of the year. I prefer Winter to Fall because Winter promises that Spring is around the corner, whereas in Fall, i’m left counting 6 months on my fingers until the first Spring bulbs. Plus, the changing of the light, often makes me depressed and affects my sleep. I’ve learned that I have to get outside in the middle of the day when sunlight is most robust (dogs help with that!), up my Vitamin D intake and if things get really bad, I take 5Htp. You need to be careful with the latter and take it at the right time of the day though. For me that’s around 4-5 in the afternoon, to be sleepy by 10 or 11. If you are like me and can wake up at any time of the night and know what time it is without looking at the clock, and suddenly you can’t, that means your Circadian rhythms are going off kilter because of the changing light. I suffer from the type that causes my rhythm to speed up and cycle faster than 24 hrs. So while I fall asleep quickly, I wake up a few hours later thinking its morning. If this happens, I start taking the 5htp until late February and then my system kicks back into the regular 24 hour cycle. I’ve noticed that the healthier I am thyroid wise, the less likely I suffer this problem in the winter. Food really affects my thyroid positively and negatively. So if you suffer from winter sleep disorders and or thyroid, learn what foods work best for you. I keep a food journal when I start having problems, so i can pinpoint the culprit. It really helps!

Donuts and other Fall Favorite Foods!

Apple Fritters and Donuts are on the menu  for Sat. They will definitely sell out, so don’t snooze on preordering them. Or come to the window when we open at 9am as donuts often sell out fast. And please remember, if you do preorder, pick up is NOT UNTIL after 10. Like everyone else, we are short staffed. We need that extra hour to pack orders.

Our Butternut Squash Pizza is back, as are our Ginger Cookies, a customer favorite. Bonus, these are Vegan! We will be rolling out the Brie En Croute this week. We also are rolling out our Thanksgiving pie flavors so you can decide your favorites. We’ve had apple. This week we will have Chocolate Pecan, Pumpkin and Mixed Berry. Available in Large and Small sizes.

Gluten Free Baking in St Bresson, France!

I am going to St Bresson next week to finalize details for housing and the class. By the end of Oct, we will open the reservations for the class. If it is something you are definitely interested in, please don’t delay signing up. We will have a firm limit of 30 class participants and have had around 75 people reach out to us so far. Many people have communicated they will bring a (non class) travel partner, and we are planning on more than 30 for housing and meals. St Bresson is in an area of the countryside with small villages dotting the hills, so its harder to find housing, than in a big city. Next week, I will be planning the menu with the chef, keeping it vegetarian friendly, with meat/fish/cheese options.  I’m a non-dairy eating 35 year vegetarian. I eat pasture raised eggs/preferably farmhouse eggs and a tiny bit of fish, and I still have delicious meals in France. So don’t worry if you have a limited diet. Trust me, few people have a more limited diet than me! In class, we will be making  all the desserts, bread and pizza for our meals.

Once we post, we will also post a sign up for optional meals for travel partners and optional daily events, like wine and cheese tasting, etc. Please be prepared to choose those things as well. We will have a guide and a van available for these daily events.

WE still have some beautiful Dahlias for you Special Occassion Cakes!

Our garden is in full of outrageously beautiful Dahlias.  We’ve continued candying flowers like crazy to stock pile for when gardening season is over.
