What’s Baking, Week of April 14th

See This Week’s Menu Here

Thanks for all the Love you gave us this week. Hope everyone who wanted a donut got one, because we made A LOT of donuts. My new favorite is the cinnamon sugar ones, which remind me of Beignets. So yummy that I split one with Emily and then  snuck a second one for myself. 😏

Updates: We are out of shopping bags (! 😱 ) and despite scouring the web over the past few weeks, there are no paper or even plastic shopping bags available anywhere (except small ones, which don’t fit our boxes.) So this means, bring your own bags, or be prepared to carry multiple boxes and bags away with you. This does NOT violate Gov Baker’s order because you do not come into the bakery to shop. In fact I haven’t once used a paper bag at the grocery store because I predicted this would happen. I put my groceries back in the cart and pack them at my car in my own bags that i regularly wash and sanitize. For deliveries we will hunt down boxes probably from the wine shop(s). This isn’t the only supply we can’t find, and I spend a good chunk of time looking for product. This is why we must be very strict about your ordering. No changes please. (Place a new order if you want to add to your original. Or cancel your order (by responding to our confirmation email–look in your spam if you can’t find it) and place a new one if you want changes.) No texting or calling us with changes, or requests to pay last minute. We need to be strict about this, no exceptions. Also, tell us if you want to PREPAY  when you order. And include your ADDRESS  (in message box) when you order if you are asking for delivery. Again, no exceptions. Otherwise, you will get a confirmation for window pick up and payment. We don’t have enough staff, or hours in the day, to make the constant request for changes that people are making. (Everyone is anxious.) And also, it is far more likely that your order will be wrong if you change it after the fact.

One last thing before i get to the  yummy part of the week. I’ve been thinking a lot this week about kindness vs niceness. We (particularly women) are taught that niceness is a virtue. But times like these demonstrate that kindness is perhaps an even more important virtue. (If you are both kind and nice right now, you are a saint.) Kindness is offering one of your masks to an older person who doesn’t have one, even if you only have a couple yourself.  Or admitting to yourself that you’ve been hoarding toilet paper and giving a pack to your friend who laments on social media that despite waiting in hour lines at 3 stores they still can’t find TP. (I’ve been there!) When i was a younger lawyer in Washington DC, we once had an exercise of saying with whom in the world (you could pick anyone and only one) you’d want to be stranded with on a desert island. One of my colleagues said Leesteffy, and i was stunned because her husband was a war correspondent (ie had survival skills) and she had a young daughter and we weren’t personal friends. When asked why, she said it was because i would never abandon her to save myself and would do everything possible to keep us both alive. That was the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me, and it has stayed with me as my talisman. Be the kind person who, when shit hits the fan, will help others and not just think of yourself and your own. I’m not always nice, but i always try to be kind. Every current hospital worker and food supply worker  is being kind to all of us. They could equally say, nope i’m sheltering at home too, and then where would we all be? Kindness matters and its something we all should be practicing more.

Now on to yumminess! To celebrate Spring, where even in Delhi the skies are clear and blue, we will roll out our mini angel food cakes with DF lemon curd in middle and a dollop of DF rose cream. A spring and summer favorite. They won’t be ready until the end of the week though, so patience.

Bread this week is Sourdough plain or with black olives OR Harvest loaf (contains pumpkin and sunflower seeds). Bread can be preordered at least 24 hours in advance for Weds-Sat, or you can come to the store and try your luck.

Sat special is  Strawberry-Rhubarb Scones. Tea Bread is also Strawberry-Rhubarb plain or with Peacans. Muffins are Blackberry-raspberry plain or with pecans.

No more pies until later in the season.  But we will make Strawberry-Rhubarb cobbler (vegan) so stay tuned.

Reminder, we have challah every Tuesday  and then our bread of the week Weds-Sat.  No preorders of challah on Tuesday, its first come, first serve. Please remember we cannot accept phone requests to hold bread, any day of the week. If you can’t make it in early, please Pre-order  by 12:00 noon the day before.

Note, we have three customer parking spaces marked behind building right next to alley with BIG orange signs. You can’t miss them.

General notes: You will get a confirmation once we receive your order.  You will ALSO get an Auto Ping back that just gives you basic info about ordering. That is not your confirmation.  Order here
