What’s Baking, Week of June 23rd (Bagel week & Last week to stock up!)

Hope you all had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend, enjoyed your donuts, and are having a relaxing Juneteenth! FYI, one tip for donuts if you don’t eat them all the day you pick up: freeze them, or if eating the next day, pop them in the micro for 20 seconds. All handmade donuts don’t taste as light and fluffy the next day, without the microwave hack or without freezing them.

We will be on vacation June 26-July 11, reopening Tuesday, July 12th. We hope to be able to stay open on Tuesdays starting when we get back, but it really depends on staffing. While we’ve been able to get inexperienced people to work the counter, we have not found any professional kitchen staff. So out of necessity, sometimes we need to pull the counter staff to the back to assist. And hence our shortened hours and days! Baking appears to be a dying profession, just like other hands-on professions like plumbers, electricians, contractors and so on. Look around at the age of the people doing these jobs and you will realize we are in deep do-do. Young people are not being encouraged to do “trades” anymore. I wonder what the USA will look like without bakers, electricians, plumbers and contractors? Germany has a less severe, but similar problem, but has a very flexible foreign worker policy. And then there is the United States of Partisan Politics. Lol. Sad but true.

Bagels!!! Stock up on Bagels this week. We also have Challah (so delicious for French toast and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.) We have our Ricotta Zucchini tarts in stock, as well as all our other savories. Almost everything we sell freezes well, even our frosted cakes. So if you have a birthday celebration while we are closed, order a cake today and freeze it. It will be perfect for your celebration.

The SATURDAY SPECIAL is Sweet or Savory Brioche. These lovely little puffy rounds freeze extremely well. You can just pop in the microwave directly from the freezer for about 30 seconds and viola, a perfect breakfast treat.

Our garden is in full bloom and this year we will even have dahlias in July because I grew them under light to give them a big head start. Many are full of buds already! The smaller varieties have been blooming for weeks now. We’ve been candying them like crazy to stock pile for when gardening season is over.

SEASONAL ITEMS NOW ON MENU: Lemon Ricotta Tart (savory, comes in dairy or vegan.) Angel Food Cupcakes with house made lemon curd center and a dollop of rose cream (DF). And our Viennese Lemon Poppy Bundtlettes!
