It is Bagel Week! Thursday thru Sat only!
While Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20th, Memorial Day weekend usually signals that summer has begun for most of us. The weather is getting warmer, and the sun stronger. It is important, even if you are staying in the house, to open your window and let yourself get some sunlight. I’m super careful about my skin, and at the same time I know that sunshine can raise spirits and make one feel that things will be okay. Even through a hat and mask, the sun help make you feel more joyful. So at a minimum, bask like a cat in whatever sunny place you can find in your house. And while you are basking, we have some start of summer treats for you this week. 1) Strawberry Rhubarb pie! (The official signal of summer to me). And 2), we are making the mini angel food cupcakes and filling them with strawberries and whipped cream (DF available). So yet, a third version of strawberry shortcake, which was my grandma’s favorite version.
Other news is we need to stream line our preorder process. We have multiple pressures at the moment, like 30% higher food costs, and packaging, particularly paper bags are costing us between 100-200% more. And higher staff costs as people are working overtime because we are short staffed. At the same time, we are aware that some people are feeling extreme financial insecurity at the moment, so we are trying to balance everything. As a start, we are trying to cut down on staff time, so we are now requiring minimums on cookies, cupcakes and rolls. For instance, we get orders that consist of 1 cookie, 1 cupcake and 1 roll, and this is time consuming and too hard to fill as a preorder. Preordering in general is FAR FAR more difficult than if customers just come to the window. That’s partially why grocery store deliveries are also so difficult. Because you have to pack orders and store them somewhere by name, and some items need refrigerating, or freezing or someone orders 1 cookie and all the rest frozen, and that cookie gets lost in the shuffle. And it takes a LOT of staff time. It’s one thing to do this in volume at Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays where we are mentally prepared for all the extra work, but week after week, it is exhausting.
So you will see you can’t preorder individual cookies any more or individual rolls. You can purchase 1 cookie at the window, just not for preordering. We are including a cookie choice of 6 and 12 mixed and you can specify in the notes which cookies you want. The minimum number for cupcakes, rolls and bagels is 3. Once you meet minimums, you can do single add ons. Again, if you come to the window there are no minimums, but for preorders, we either have to raise our prices significantly or find other cost cutting measures, which is what we are trying to do. I know this isn’t going to work for everyone, but its the best we can do. And you always have the choice of buying at the window where there are no restrictions.
This week our SAT Special is Cranberry-orange scones. And of course the Angel food strawberry shortcake which will be available Thurs-Sat. YUM!
Tea bread this week is Cranberry Orange, plain or with Pecans. Muffins are Lemon-poppy.
Bread is bagels or Challah (loaves and rolls) Available Thursday-Sat. Bread can be preordered at least 24 hours in advance for Thurs-Sat, or you can come to the store and try your luck. We have Challah every Tuesday for walk in or pre-order (but not this Tuesday since we are closed.)
Here is our grocery list for the week. We plan based on what suppliers tell us they have, and then sometimes they run out. 🤷♀️ Please remember, grocery items don’t count toward delivery minimums. Thanks.
Also, if you are hankering for some Asian take out food our next door neighbor, Chalawan, has a GF menu. I haven’t eaten there since they rebranded, but its the same owners and the staff and I have eaten from their old menu lots of times. They too, need a little LOVE these days. They have delivery and pick up and are literally, right next door.
